The Cause of Autoimmune Disease Is Gut Flora Imbalance – Ted Talks

I did a post a few days ago about how an out of whack microbiome is now the working hypothesis as the cause of autism. It also appears that it might be the cause of a lot of other things. Like Type 1 diabetes and ADHD. Like all autoimmune disease and obesity. Yes, all of them. This is a very inflammatory thing to say. Especially when we get to the cures. I know that. The problem is that the evidence is getting very overwhelming that this is the problem. Real evidence. From actual experts. I know that this can get really technical so I wanted to find some TED talks on the subject. If you watch only one of these make it this one. They are studying microbe based therapeutics at CalTech as a cure for autism. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWT_BLVOASI This one is about Type 1 diabetes These are just a primer on the microbiome https://www.ted.com/talks/bonnie_bassler_on_how_bacteria_communicate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Af5qUxl1ktI Now here is the inflammatory part. This is the part people don’t like to hear and that no one wants to say. You can plant as many fresh new bushes as you want. Without proper soil and water they will be dead in a month. Although we don’t yet know how, since we don’t know all the bacteria involved, anyone who gets this treatment is likely to need to be on a special diet,...

Gluten-Free Soy-Free Vegan Kosher Chocolate Sandwich Cookies

I love refrigerator cookies. They are essentially slice and bake. The dough can be frozen then thawed then baked. You can just make the dough one day and then slice and bake on a different day. These cookies are gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, vegan, soy-free, nut-free, seed-free and contain only kosher ingredients. They are also pretty easy to make. There are a few key steps that you need to do to get a good result. First, make sure you let the egg replacer set up. It has to sit until it gets thick. Second really incorporate the egg replacer into...

Prime Rib Made Easy

When we are eating out and in doubt as to what is safe to eat, a fair bet is prime rib. Prime rib is rarely marinated or coated in sauce and it feels very much like a treat. It is also a crowd pleaser. At least in my family. Too bad I was always terrified of making it at home. I mean it is huge, it doesn’t reheat well, and you can’t exactly cut into it to see if it is done. But prime rib, coleslaw, and mashed potatoes or rice and you have a fancy dinner for almost...

Gluten-Free Soy-Free Tropical Asian Grilled Flank Steak

I love grass fed steaks, but they tend to be tougher than feedlot steak so they are better with a marinade. I used to use soy sauce as a marinade but since that is no longer an option for us I needed a new marinade, one that didn’t cause… problems. Enter the tropical asian marinade. You can use regular limes in place of key limes. Be aware that key limes produce very little juice, but have a lot of skin and are very tart. If you can handle Ingredients 6 key limes 6 to 10 cloves garlic (it depends...

Does Antibiotic Overuse Cause Autism?

Over the years I have read many half baked and even dangerous theories about why there is an autism epidemic in this country. There are a lot of interesting correlations, but none of the hypotheses held up to further scrutiny. Until now. Missing Microbes explores the link between the human microbiome and obesity, food allergies, ADHD, celiac disease, increasing height, and autism. It is written by a former CDC epidemiologist who has dedicated his life to understanding microbes. The hypothesis is simple. In our legitimate quest to eliminate pathogens we have overused antibiotics, hand sanitizer, c-sections, and even soap...

Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Egg-Free Savory Lamb Meatball Soup

Many of the recipes on this site are adaptations of existing recipes. I did not invent key lime pie, I just figured out how to remove gluten and dairy without it becoming a project. I did not invent meatballs. I did however, invent this soup from whole cloth. I never had anything like it, but I had a batch of not quite perfect lamb mini-meatballs and was trying to use up cilantro in my refrigerator when I had a brain cramp. I threw in the healthiest wildest ingredients I could think of and I made soup. It sounded wrong...

The Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Soy-Free Nut-Free Easter Bunny

This time of year I rely heavily on Kosher for Passover treats. Anything that meets those criteria but does not contain matzah is probably gluten-free, corn-free, soy-free and dairy-free. Plus there really are bakeries that make authentic italian cookies that are Kosher for Passover and do not taste gluten-free. However the Kosher for Passover Easter Bunny has not caught on. I am pretty sure it hasn’t been produced anywhere…ever. So when it came to obtaining a safe chocolate Easter bunny I was on my own. When your list of “things to avoid” is as long as mine is, the...

A Link Between Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) and Autism?

I avoid MSG because it makes mammals overeat and become obese. I consider that a sufficient reason. If I am going to get fat I want cookies or ice cream or key lime pie to be involved. I don’t want to get fat eating an additive that may also cause headaches. However if you want another reason, this mom seemed to find that her autistic daughter had chemical sensitivities underlying her autism. Now these chemical sensitivities are not new and all fit in well to the hypothesis that we have damaged our bionome and that this is what is causing our modern epidemics including certain forms of autism. When she removed MSG (after first removing gluten and casien) her daughter improved. So I went looking for some evidence that this might be true. As it turns out they just did a mouse study that indicated the MSG and aspartame can adversely impact brain function and cognition in mice. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24556450 And they have know for a while that glutamate activity can play a role in seizures http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7970002 That said, I did not find any compelling evidence that removing MSG vs removing glutamates would cure autism. It is also worth noting that she had already removed gluten and dairy. When we discuss salicylates I can carpet bomb you with credible evidence and a theory as to why it happens coming out...

Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Vegan Soy-Free Whoopie Pies

On spring break we were shopping in the Whole Foods in Sarasota when I came upon frozen gluten-Free, dairy-Free GMO free, vegan, soy-free kosher pareve whoopie pies. So of course we had to try them. We actually had to try two boxes. I could tell that they would need lots of testing. Sooo, they are awesome. These two women, who call themselves The Piping Gourmets, have invented a frozen dessert that can be quickly defrosted and tastes like I remember a Devil Dog tasting, only better and more real (I know they still exist, but for obvious reasons, I...

Salicylates and Sunblock vs Sunscreen

We just returned to Illinois after a week in the Florida sunshine. In Florida we absolutely need to wear sun protection every day. This is a problem if you are trying to avoid salicylates since most sunscreens are actually salicylates designed to be absorbed into the skin. We have always used mineral blocks instead of chemical sunscreens. Zinc Oxide and / or Titanium Dioxide, especially if they are not micronized, are essential sun protection. Most doctors will tell you that these blocks are the best ways to protect yourself from the sun (besides hats and sun protective clothing). That...
