Low allergen low salicylate cookbook

Cookbook with explanations about the diet from the Royal Prince Albert Hospital Allergy Unit

Although this site has many recipes on it, you should be aware of another, ready made source of recipes. There is a cookbook put out by the Royal Prince Albert Hospital’s Allergy Unit which specifically addresses the need for a low allergen low salicylate diet. This is the diet that has been shown in multiple well-designed studies to eliminate ADD and ADHD in children most of the time. Not to mention the impact on rashes which is actually what they were studying in 1988 when they stumbled upon the fact that not only did the rash vanish, but the children became much more able to focus.

The name of the cookbook in the United States is Friendly Food. It does have to be shipped from Australia so it takes a while to get here. The recipes are designed with “normal” people in mind. There are no recipes that require you to use an electric mixer and a double boiler at the same time.

I find that a lot of people think that their children will never eat a “special diet”. Let me reassure you. When you explain to your child that he has to stick with things like garlic bread, grilled cheese sandwiches (with Daiya cheese and gluten free bread) cookies, cake, chocolate, meat and beans and must never eat broccoli, spinach, dark green lettuce, kale, curry or strawberries the look of possessed glee is palpable.

It is not a veggie free diet by any means. Parsley, celery, peas, cabbage, pale lettuce, carrots, bamboo shoots and many other veggies are allowed and even encouraged. Its just that all the ones that you have to bribe your kids to eat…those are no longer permitted.

Scene from my house
Grandma: “Oh no, more foods he has to give up?”
Me: “Yeah but this time he is giving up broccoli, kale, spinach and dark green salads”
Grandma: “How upset is he?”
Me: “He’s dancing”

On the one hand I am sure that the other shoppers at Whole Foods must find the sight of a mother saying “no honey, no strawberries, have a potato chip instead” rather bizarre, but the truth is that the diet allows for some grains, peeled potatoes, and sugar. It just restricts fruit, some spices and some vegetables.
